Twitter said that on Friday it has closed thousands of accounts worldwide for the dissemination of fake news as well as government propaganda in places like the UAE, China and Spain.
Accounts from China that tried to sow discord among protesters in Hong Kong were closed, as were accounts from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in Qatar and Yemen that amplified the pro-Saudi message, Twitter said.
Fake news accounts in Spain and Ecuador were also suspended.
The release of information is part of the company’s push to use its platform to manipulate public opinion by state actors.
Twitter said they identified 4,302 accounts based in China as “an attempt to dispel discord about the protest movement in Hong Kong.”
It follows the August identification of more than 200,000 fake accounts in China engaged in promoting public discord in Hong Kong.
