Xiaomi’s Redmi K20 proved to be a successful outing for Xiaomi in terms of shipment figures, but its successors would reportedly pack some notable upgrades. According to the code in the MIUI 11 code, the Redmi K30 reportedly has a 120Hz display, a feature that has not yet come on a non-flagship phone. Apart from this, the Redmi K30 is also designed to pack Sony’s 60-megapixel IMX686 sensor. Interestingly, the phone will dig up its predecessor’s in-display fingerprint sensor and reportedly employ a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.
XDA-Developers mentions in MIUI 11 that the upcoming Xiaomi smartphone is named “Phoenix”, launched for the first time as the Redmi K30. The code of MIUI 11 mentions a high frame rate support feature linked to the alleged Redmi K30. There are two presets in the refresh rate setting – 60 Hz and 120 Hz. While it is interesting to note that there is no 90Hz refresh rate option, 120Hz is still a much larger upgrade to the Redmi K30 than its predecessor and a standout feature for a non-flagship Android phone.
Coming to imaging hardware, a Qualcomm camera library includes the strings “Phoenix_IMEX686”, which suggests that the “Phoenix” aka Redmi K30 will pack Sony’s 60-megapixel IMX686 sensor. We do not yet see a phone that packs this special Sony sensor, but the upcoming Huawei Nova 6 5G has been equipped with this new sensor and will be launched on 5 December. It is noteworthy that Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun has also confirmed that Redmi K30 5G will debut in December as well.
Another useful information revealed by the string in the MIUI code is that the Redmi K30 may have a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. The code mentions something called “broadside” and is accompanied by a string that says “the fingerprint sensor is located on the right edge of your device”. The graphic that comes with it shows the schematic of a phone with a double hole-punch display and the user’s thumb on the side-mounted fingerprint sensor. As mentioned earlier, all of the above details are associated with a phone codename “Phoenix” in the MIUI 11 code, called the Redmi K30.
