MIUI 12 May Have an Enhanced Reading Mode With E-Ink Display Texture

Xiaomi is working on an extended reading mode on the MIUI 12 to provide smartphone users with the same experience as the e-ink display. The new growth is expected to add a paper-like textured overlay to the screen to reduce eye strain. An MIUI 12 beta version for Chinese users has been spotted with new options within the reading mode settings. However, Xiaomi has not given any clarity as to whether the latest offering will be available in all its MIUI 12-compatible models.

MIUI 12 China Beta ROM version 20.6.30 refers to an option called “paper”, which will be a part of the extended reading mode, as previously reported by the Polish blog MIUI Polska. Some screenshots shared online from the beta ROM show that the new option will be available as part of the updated reading mode settings and will add “thick paper-like texture” to all elements visible on the screen. This is likely to turn the existing experience outlined by XDA developers into faux e-ink displays.

With the new paper option, the increased reading mode on the MIUI 12 brings the ability to adjust the color temperature of the display. After enabling the reading mode there will be options like ‘Full Colors’, ‘Light Colors’ and ‘Black and White’ to make some changes in the color temperature. While the ‘Full Colors’ option will have a yellow overlay, the ‘Light Colors’ option is likely to be able to fade on-screen colors, similar to the ‘chromatic’ reading mode available on OnePlus ‘Oxygen’.
