Facebook-owned Instagram has announced banning people under the age of 18 from seeing posts from celebrity influencers promoting cosmetic surgery and various weight loss products.
Some posts will be hidden from users under the age of 18, while others will be removed from Instagram as well as the parent company’s platform Facebook, Instagram’s public policy manager Emma Collins said in a statement on Wednesday.
“We want Instagram to be a positive place for everyone who uses it and this is part of our ongoing work to ease policy pressures that people may sometimes feel as a result of social media,” Collins was told in a report on cbsnews .com.
Social media users including actress Jamila Jamil have long been critical of influencers such as Kim and Chloe Kardashian and Kylie Jenner for promoting fat-loss products.
“If celebs and efficacy were really honest with us about some of these diet / detox products …” Jamil tweeted in November last year which went viral.
Instagram will remove the posts altogether if it “makes a miraculous claim about certain diets or weight loss products, and is associated with a commercial offer such as a discount code”.
The updated policy is part of Instagram’s work “to ease the pressure people may sometimes feel as a result of social media,” one Collins said.
